Well shit. You're probably wondering what happened to me. Well, lucky you. That's the purpose of this entry. The last week or so (up until the 7th) was absolute Hell on Wheels. CMT (MTV Networks) hired me to DJ their Flameworthy Awards Afterparty. They took a half a week deciding what songs I could and Could not play, and still needed me to remix 4 hours worth of Country tunes. That's right, I said REMIX.
Any other time this would be my dream job (and in a way it still was), but I hate Contemporary Country and to make matters worse they were wanting me to remix it in a Techno style. (Quote from client: "Like C&C Music factory")
The main thing they pointed out from which was two things I despise most, The saw tooth synth sound and the swelling snare roll. (both played out in my opinion)
To make matters worse, the old harddrive had died as soon as I got the job, effectively wiping out all my production parts, causing me to download them and also killing valuable time waiting for Matt to reload a new drive. (And no it's not Matt's fault)
On top of that, the computer chair breaks, making it even harder to work long hours at the computer. (having no other chair of appropriate size)
And the final touch... My car dies!!!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!
The sooner it got to the gig (april 7th) the more my stomach was in knots. The remixing was harder than I thought. Not because I can't do it, but because of the requirements. No song older than a year, specific artists were removed, and no Ballads. (ahem... aren't most country songs ballads?)
As a matter of fact, MOST of the top 15 in country, as of right now, is a ballad.
So I actually made some, in my opinion, rather innapropriate mixes. I made a techno mix of Traveling soldier, by the Dixie Chicks. Also heavy mixes of Pro american war songs, which are Sooooo popular now that clearchannel is starting grassroots pro-war campaigns.
Sunday came and I only had about 1 1/2 hours of stuff remixed. (they had originally wanted 4 hours) I wish they would have given me a bit more notice, as I could have mixed the entire 4 hours. (although it would have killed me.)
As for the actual gig? What was it like?
You'll have to wait for the next entry, because I have to go to nashville right now and pick up my paycheck and a W-2. (nothing better than waiting till last minute to do your taxes!!!)
