I probably couldn't have asked for a better day. The weather was nice, I woke up to a warm naked teenager, and I went on an amazing adventure.Well, not really an adventure, but I did go Downtown Nashville, with the two women I love the most and see two things that mean a lot to me.
The Declaration of Independence and Michael Moore's new film "Bowling For Columbine".
Before going, Valorie and I went to my mother's house and had a great meal of Mom's famous chicken stir-fry. (one of these days I'll learn how to make it as well as she does.) We then left for the downtown Nashville public library, where they have the DOI Road Tour from Noveber 9th to the 21st. The new library (renevated out of an old Mall; I wish that would happen more often.) is beautiful. They did a really good job, from the vaulted ceilings to the murals on the wall. I'll have to go back and actually read a book there someday.
Anyways, we waited in line and read all of the quips they had on the wall banners, the placards in line and the comments left on index cards from the people in last city the DOI was in. This copy of the Declaration of Independence is one of the 25 existing Dunlap Broadsides printed on July 4th 1776 (the actual DOI wasn't signed until August 2nd of that year.). Some chubby 12yr old in a pink shirt in front of us leaked some noxious gas from her hindside, keeping me from reading one of the placards. While seeing the parchment wasn't as amazing as I felt it would be, just being there at the exhibit was. To be refreshed as to what is important in America, and to know that this document helped incite protest against many an injustice. (some even succesful in causing change)
I even liked the educational short that accompanied the exhibit, even though the host, (greasy) Reese Witherspoon, had to point out that she was related to an actual signee. As I was leaving the viewing, I commented, "Now if we can only get though the next twenty years without our government mangling this document," to which the installation's curator replied, "Oh, you're worried about that too, huh?"
Good to feel I'm not alone in my political angst.
(Despite what people voted last Tuesday.)
Another thing that let me know I wasn't alone was the new movie "Bowling For Columbine". All I can say is, GO SEE IT!!! NOW!!! Drag anyone and everyone to see it. It should be required viewing in all High Schools, Voter registration booths, and Republican Primaries. They should Force people to watch this film!!!
Ok, maybe I'm being a little extreme, but...
GODDAMN IT, GO SEE THIS FILM!!!
I cried at least three times, and laughed uncontrollably through most of it. It's one of those movies where you find yourself clapping out loud (as if the director could hear) along with the entire audience during the movie. Wow, what a great movie. I won't try to spoil it for you, but here's the website for Bowling For Columbine.
Hey, I gotta go. Valorie and I have rented an obscene amount of movies.
Roger & Me
The Big One
(both Michael Moore films)
Man On The Moon
(for Valorie)
Get Bruce
(for Me)
and six episodes of
The Young Ones
(to educate "the" young one)
But don't worry,
I'll be back before you know it.
